How Medicare Works and Your Coverage Options
Medicare is a federal health insurance program designed primarily for people age 65 and older, as well as certain individuals under 65 who qualify due to disability. While it provides valuable health coverage, many people find the structure confusing when they first begin exploring their options.
That is where guidance can make a difference. At Strive Medicare, we help you understand how Medicare works and how the different coverage options fit together. Once you understand the basics, it becomes much easier to make confident decisions about your healthcare coverage.
Understanding Original Medicare
Original Medicare serves as the foundation of most Medicare coverage. It is made up of two parts that help cover different types of healthcare services.
Part A, often referred to as hospital insurance, helps cover inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice services, and certain home health services.
Part B, known as medical insurance, helps cover doctor visits, outpatient services, preventive care, diagnostic tests, medical equipment, and other medically necessary services.
Most people qualify for Part A without paying a monthly premium if they have worked and paid Medicare taxes for a sufficient number of years. Part B does include a monthly premium, and both Part A and Part B have deductibles and cost sharing that you should consider when planning your coverage.
What Original Medicare Covers
What Original Medicare Does Not Cover
While Original Medicare provides important healthcare coverage, it does not include everything. Many beneficiaries choose additional coverage to help fill these gaps.
Common services that Original Medicare typically does not cover include:
- Prescription medications, which usually require a separate Prescription Drug plan
- Routine dental care, vision services, and hearing exams
- Long-term custodial care, such as assistance with bathing, dressing, or daily living activities
- Healthcare services outside of the United States, except for a few limited emergency situations
Because of these coverage gaps, many people choose additional Medicare plans to help manage costs and provide broader protection.
Finding The Coverage That Fits You
Understanding how Medicare works is the first step toward choosing the coverage that fits your needs. When it comes to healthcare coverage and Medicare, you have two options: Original Medicare with a Medigap or Medicare Advantage. Some people prefer to stay with Original Medicare and add a Medicare Supplement plan for additional cost protection. Others choose a Medicare Advantage plan that combines several benefits into a single plan.
Every situation is different. Your health needs, budget, and lifestyle all play a role in determining the right path forward. Strive Medicare is here to help you review your options, compare plans, and choose coverage that gives you confidence in your healthcare decisions.
